That afternoon, after they’d dropped Kenzie back at her mom’s, Lacey sat down at her computer and pulled up a Freedom of Information Act request form. She filled it out, attached it to an email and had it all ready to send, then called her friend Liz Dempsey at the Medical Examiner’s office.

“Medical Examiner,” the familiar voice said.

“Liz? Hi. It’s Lacey Fitzpatrick. How are you doing?”

“I’m good, Lacey. How about you?”

“Doing okay,” Lacey said. “And you can probably guess what I need.”

“Three guesses and the first two don’t count?” Liz joked. “You’re on another case and need an autopsy report, right?”

“Exactly,” Lacey laughed. “You know me too well. I’ve got an FOIA form all set to email you. Sending… now.” She pushed the send button on her computer.

“Okay, hang on,” Liz said. She left the line open while she checked her email. “And there it is. Let’s see…” Lacey heard the tapping on her keyboard. “Okay, Elaine Miklos. Died May 2, 2021. Another ghost story?” Liz asked.

“We think so,” Lacey said. “It’s a bit convoluted, and Sam hasn’t walked the property yet, but we’re hearing things that don’t quite add up.”

“Hearing from whom?” Liz asked as she worked.

“The woman’s daughter,” Lacey said. “She’s apparently sensitive and has seen her mom. She said her mom died of heart issues, but the woman appears to her holding her stomach.”

“Hmm, that does sound odd,” Liz said. “Okay, I’ve got the report here. Had a history of arrhythmia and low blood pressure. Cause of death listed as cardiac arrest. Let me see…” Lacey waited quietly as Liz paged through the digital report. “Toxicology report was negative,” Liz said. “No visible evidence of trauma to the body. No, I don’t see any indication of anything but the heart itself. Sorry.”

“Hmm,” Lacey said. “That’s odd. But you’ve got the last, official word. Guess we’ll have to look elsewhere.”

“Or maybe the girl… didn’t really see what she thought she saw? Or misinterpreted it?”

“That’s possible,” Lacey allowed. “Well, we’ll see what else we can find. Thanks a bunch, Liz. Appreciate your help, as always.”

“Anytime,” Liz said.

Lacey laid her phone aside and sat back in her chair, staring up at the ceiling. Had Cassie misunderstood her mother’s ghost? Was she… lying? She’d certainly been right about Russell, and hadn’t misinterpreted him at all. Unfortunately, Lacey couldn’t completely dismiss the notion that Cassie had been deemed mentally unbalanced. She and Sam had seen no evidence of that, but that didn’t mean the diagnosis was wrong.

The more she thought about it, the more she kept circling back to one path, one way forward.

Sam needed to walk Cassie’s house.

And how the hell were they going to do that?
